VS1 vs. VS2 Clarity in Diamonds: Which One Should You Choose? 

One of the most important factors that affects the overall appearance and value of a diamond is its clarity. The VS (Very Slightly Included) clarity grade is among the diamond grading systems customers prefer because of its balance in quality and cost. Diamonds in this category are classified into VS1 and VS2 diamonds. What is the difference, and which diamond is ideal for you? Let's look closer. 

Understanding VS Clarity 

Clarity is defined as having internal or external imperfections which can also be referred to as inclusions or blemishes. These characteristics emerge naturally during the diamond's birth. Representing inclusions that are imperceptible to the naked eye, the VS (Very Slightly Included) category is considered among one of the best choices available.  

The Gemological Institute of America separates diamond clarity grades which range from VVS (Very Very Slightly Included) into two categories VS1 and VS2 and SI (Slightly Included). The inclusions for both VS1 and VS2 diamonds are eye-clean and require magnification to be seen. Without magnification, inclusions are nearly impossible to detect. 

Differences Between VS1 and VS2 

In most cases, the primary distinctions found between VS1 and VS2 diamonds is the visibility of inclusions.

VS1 Diamonds – These diamonds, along with other types of precious gems, are noted to be basically flawless diamonds since they contain inclusions so small that not even the most powerful magnification of 10 can make them visible. They are close to 100% eye-clean, hence their inclusions are never clearly visible without optical aid.

VS2 Diamonds - VS2 diamonds, also noteable inclusions above the aforementioned class, can be clearly seen under basic magnification or to some degree with the naked eye depending upon the type and position of the inclusion.

Price Difference - Due to the lesser and hardly visible inclusions, VS1 diamonds are priced slightly higher and considered to be of greater quality than VS2 diamonds which are relatively cheaper. If budget constraining issue arises, one always has the option of selecting a VS2 diamond that offer decent quality and is not overly priced.

Brilliance and Sparkle - The difference in inclusions as detail external characteristics does not greatly affect the brilliance of the diamond. However, light reflection would be altered by diamonds that are of lower placement as far as their rankings are concerns hence making these stones less brilliant than other higher ranked stones by all standards such as the case for VS1 diamonds. 

Which One Should You Choose? - In order to decide between VS1 and VS2, a multitude of aspects has to be considered:

Budget: If you desire the best clarity while trying to stay clear of the lavish VVS diamonds, then VS1 would be the most suitable option. On the other hand, if money matters, while still wanting wondrous beauty, cheap options abound in the form of VS2 diamonds.

Diamond Size: For larger diamonds, such as those above 1.5 carats, the visibility of inclusions increases. A VS1 diamond may be a better investment for bigger stones because it preserves eye-clean quality.

Setting Choice: If your diamond is set to conceal small inclusions, such as in bezel settings, then VS2 can be a wise choice.

Both VS1 and VS2 diamonds offer the greatest value for the price and still provide excellent clarity. If you desire a diamond with an eye-clean appearance and don't mind spending a bit more, go for the VS1. On the other hand, if you want to make the most of your budget but still get an eye-clean diamond, then VS2 is amazing.
